Do QR Codes Expire? The Honest Answer
Static QR codes never expire, but dynamic ones can. Learn the difference and how to make sure your printed QR code keeps working.
The short answer
A QR code is just a pattern of squares that encodes data. A static QR code stores your link or text directly in that pattern, so there is nothing that can expire — the code is as permanent as the ink it's printed with.
When QR codes do stop working
Many 'free' generators actually create dynamic QR codes. These contain a short redirect link on the provider's servers. If your trial ends or you stop paying, the redirect is switched off and every printed code breaks.
A static code can also stop working when its destination disappears:
- The web page is deleted or moved
- Your domain name expires
- A WiFi password is changed
- A phone number is no longer in use
How to make a QR code that lasts
Use a static QR code and point it to a page you control on your own domain. If the content changes, update the page — the QR code itself never needs to change.
